San Marcos Area

Located on the Balcones Fault, where blackland prairies meet the picturesque Texas Hill Country, the city of San Marcos overlooks the headwaters of the crystal clear San Marcos River. Founded in 1851, and strategically located about halfway between Austin and San Antonio, San Marcos offers a rich cultural and recreational environment in which to live and study. With a permanent population of approximately 38,000 people, and an average temperature of 68o F, it nevertheless remains a world away from the hustle and bustle of big city life. Although the university currently enrolls more than 25,000 students, it has maintained the intimacy of a small university, providing an intellectual environment where faculty and students may interact closely.
